Gulf Coast Oil Spill Threatens Louisiana’s Wildlife
As you may have heard, the oil from the Gulf of Mexico oil rig explosion is approaching the shores of Louisiana’s delicate marsh lands and the mouth of the Mississippi River. These particular areas are of dire importance to the life cycle of migrating birds, marine life and land mammals.
Many marine animals will suffer due to this disaster. Whales, dolphins, sea turtles and many types of fish just to name a few. As the oil makes its way towards shore the danger becomes even more damaging.
The animals that are under the highest threat are animals that depend on the coastal waters for their survival. Such as, beach nesting migratory birds, shrimp, blue crabs, mink and otters.
The beaches in this area are nesting grounds for birds like Plovers, Sandpipers, Terns, Oyster-catchers and even the endangered Brown Pelican. Generations of birds and other coastal animals could be effected if the ecosystem in this area is knocked off balance.
Shrimp and Blue Crab depend on coastal waters to begin their life cycle. Not to mention that these animals are of huge importance to the seafood industry in the area. The same goes for oysters, some of the largest Oyster Farms in the country are found around the coast of Louisiana.
On land, Otters and Mink make the rivers and coastal waters their home. Eighty percent of their diet is foraged from the shallow waters of the coastline and river. Blue crab and oysters is their number one food source.
We will not know the extent of the damage until much further down the road. From what I have read, the oil from the Gulf of Mexico is lighter and not as toxic. Earlier this month I wrote blog about how drilling for oil off the coast(s) of Florida wasn’t a good idea. Hopefully, the powers that be take into consideration the dangers that offshore drilling poses to the coastal ecosystems and change their minds.

Pollen Invasion
If you live anywhere in the US right now you have no doubt been invaded by pollen. That bright green dust is everywhere. Our sinuses, cars and homes are under attack. This has been the worst pollen season in over 10 years for most states.
Our Florida Trees have been the biggest culprit. Oaks, Pines, and Orange trees are putting on a huge display of green, powdery, sinus misery this season.
If you would like to learn more about what types of trees and flowers that are blooming in your Florida neighborhood, check out our books on Florida Trees and books on Florida Flowers.
Track the pollen in your area.
Reports say this pollen invasion will last for weeks. Here are some helpful tips for those of you suffering.
• Close your house and car window
• Wash pollen off your hair and skin after you’ve been outside
• Wash pets that have been outdoors
• Change your air filter every couple of weeks
• If your symptoms are severe, make an appointment with your doctor

Insects, Plants & Nature Books
Insects, Plants & Nature Books
Spring has arrived and many of us in Florida have already started our gardens. You might be wondering what that strange bug is that is living in your garden. Florida has a lot of insects and so many of them are beneficial to your garden’s ecosystem so before you go spraying poison on everything, do some educational reading and find out what type of insects you have in your garden then you can create a plan of action.
For instance, if the bugs you have are harming your plants you might be able to introduce other bugs that will eat the plant destroying insects. Lady Bugs are great for just this type of work! They love to eat pesky Aphids.
Your garden can provide months of joy for you and your family. See our gardening books and nature books for ideas on ways to make your garden an expression of yourself and a place for your children to learn and explore.
