Sharks Take a Bite Out of Sea Culture

Posted in Sharks by Administrator on the August 22nd, 2011

Sharks were commonly mixed up with sea turtles before the blockbuster “Jaws” came out and changed everyone’s perception of these nebulous sea creatures. Because of such a ghastly, terrifying movie depiction, the results were disastrous. Sharks were banned from public schools, speed dating gatherings, and assisted living facility open houses. They have been banished to the far reaches of the oceans ever since, plotting to get their revenge on partner-seeking singles and most of all, Richard Dreyfuss.

Cast your preconceptions aside and embrace the commanding maritime presence of the shark. Learn about the benign, panacea-like nature of the nurse shark and the industrious, handyman disposition of the hammerhead shark with one of our great shark books that we offer. If your book-driven journeys take you far enough into the depths of the high seas, you might just find yourself rooting for mega shark to take out giant squid once and for all.

Nothing But a Sleight of Hand

Posted in Magic by Administrator on the August 18th, 2011

Also known as prestidigitation or legerdemain, sleight of hand is the ability to manipulate objects secretly to give the effect that they are either disappearing or fabricating themselves. Illusionists typically do this with wedding rings at bars, to gain the upper-hand in a grueling game of Checkers, and to hastily conceal questionable substances when the parents drop in on an unannounced visit. Most sleight of hand magicians routinely practice with cards and coins, but from personal experience, being able to pull an entire kosher pickle from behind someone’s ear is far more entertaining.

To master the technique of sleight of hand, one must embrace the principles of palm, ditch, steal, load, simulation, misdirection, and switch. This many sound like the process of reprogramming Johnny-5 from “Short Circuit”, but if you read our book “Sleight of Hand: A Practical Manual of Legerdemain for Amateurs and Others”, you would know that this is the only way to go. And then you would take the book and make it vanish that instant.

Holiday Bliss

Posted in Holidays by Administrator on the August 11th, 2011

Summertime is like an imaginary friend-Really fun at first, but eventually you just want it to go away. Summer brings fall, and fall brings our first cherished holidays, beloved Football season, and the only way trees can get back at human beings for their brethren falling to deforestation. If your favorite fall holiday is Halloween, Beyda and Associates has a great Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street DVD collection. There’s even a DVD that pairs the two called “Freddy Vs. Jason” when you didn’t think Hollywood could ever run out of blockbuster ideas.

Once we move into November and Thanksgiving, we prepare ourselves for the annual turkey feasting extravaganza. Though we have turkey as the centerpiece of most of our dinners, this wasn’t the case for the original Thanksgiving! There were plenty of different birds, along with eel, lobster, and a slew of vegetable. History claims many different reasons why the turkey became synonymous with Thanksgiving (Ben Franklin, the Queen of England), but it’s pretty obvious it was decades of U.S. government lobbying and payola from the turkey industry.

Keeping Your Brain Alive

Posted in Brain Books by Administrator on the August 3rd, 2011

The phrase “use it or lose it” most definitely applies to our brains. That’s why America was afflicted by the cranial exodus of the 50’s when new television recipients were afflicted by fleeing brains. These unruly brains needed persuasion to stay put by the subtle aural stimulation of Copland and Gershwin. Brains thrive on being challenged by logic games, Wednesday night trivia, casual debates about LIBOR rates, and over-sized crossword puzzles. Sadly, the gentle massaging of the brain with q-tips has little to no affect on its strength.

Our book “Keep Your Brain Alive” contains 83 neurobic exercises to improve mental fitness. When you read the book and perform logic crunches with the complex problems, your brain’s myelin and neural pathways construct your brain’s personal gym, equipped with an elliptical, recumbent bike, free weights, and everything needed to execute an effective bench press. Before you know it, you’ll be swooning passer-byers by the sheer brainpower you’ll be exuding from every orifice.
